My name is Kara. I have a three-year-old called Isaac and now a seven-month-old called Winnie, and I couldn’t be happier.
Unfortunately, I became paralysed by a rare autoimmune disease called NMO (Neuromyelitis optica). Fortunately, at the same time, I found out that I was pregnant. For Winnie’s birth, I had a C-section. I was really scared as I had Isaac naturally, but due to my paralysis this was not possible. Turns out a C-section is fantastic.
We had some difficulties getting me on the bed to put the spinal block in but there were an amazing team of nurses who helped me and reassured me. After Winnie was born my husband was allowed to stay with me the whole 2 weeks I was kept in. It gave us real time to bond as a family.
Life in a wheelchair has opened my eyes. I now understand the real struggle disable people go through. Being a mum is tough but being a mum with a disability is on a whole new level. My children are my motivation. They are my reason I try so hard to gain independence.
My advice to any parents with a disability… ask for help if you need it ????
